John Y. Swenson - 1/1/2008

Class of 1946

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, John Y Swenson, 79, passed peacefully from this earth surrounded by his family on the evening of January 1, 2008 from complications of Parkinson's disease. What a happy new year he had with loved ones and friends who have passed on before him!

John was the 10th child born to Ezra James Swenson and Elsie Walker Swenson on April 25, 1928. From his home at an early age he was taught the principles of love, hard work, honesty and integrity which he lived by example all of this life. He was a graduate of Pleasant Grove High School and Brigham Young University. He served honorably in the Army during the occupation of Japan and the Korean War.

He married his friend and sweetheart, Carol Stark of Orem on June 14, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. He purchased the family farm that had been settled by his grandfather, Knud Swenson, who had tilled the earth in the 1870's and made it blossom from sagebrush to a productive farm. John continued in that same tradition where he became a successful farmer and dairyman. Several of his registered Holstein cows still hold state and national records today. In 1956 he was voted Utah State Young Farmer of the Year and represented Utah at the National Young Farmers Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. He was also elected Utah State Young Farmers President along with his wife Carol, who was the President of the Utah State Young Homemakers. He served on the board of the Utah County Farm Bureau and was also on the board of the Timpanogos Soil Conservation District helping many farmers in the community. He was a charter member of the Pleasant Grove Kiwanis Club. He was a successful businessman, developer and broker of All American Realty for 40 years. He was an avid outdoorsman with a love for the beauty found in nature and all things pertaining to the outdoors. Many of his friends and family cherished the memories of time spent with John as he excelled in hunting, fishing, and tying flies. He was also a guide numerous times as he led others into the Alaskan wilderness fishing for salmon and halibut.

He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in various callings, his favorite being that of a home teacher. John & Carol served an 18 month service mission together. What was most important to him throughout his life was serving his fellowman.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol; father of six children: Stephen, deceased; Mary (Ken) Thompson, Highland; Reed (MaryAnn) Swenson, Cedar Hills; Robyn, deceased; David (Paige) Swenson, Logan; Jill (Blair) Caldwell, Pleasant Grove; 23 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren (with two more expected this year); four siblings: Lorraine Boyer, Pleasant Grove; K. "Knud" (Shirley), Parowan; James (Carol), St. George; Dee (Marilyn), Great Falls, MT; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers: Blaine, Bud, and Leland; sisters, Chastina, Mildred Ferre, and Laura McIntyre.
