Dan Farnsworth Joseph - 11/3/2011

Class of 1949

Dan Farnsworth Joseph- died November 3, 2011 in Beaver, where he lived most of his life. Dan was born in Beaver on April 28, 1931 to Ernest and Ellen Joseph. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Beaver High School in 1949.

After a short time at Brigham Young University, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Northern California. When he returned, he married Joyce McQuarrie on January 14, 1953 in the St. George LDS Temple. While still newlyweds, Dan enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas and Spokane, Washington. He often flew as a crew member on the B-36 Bomber which included missions to Guam.

Upon leaving the Air Force, Dan and Joyce returned to Beaver to take ownership of the family farm. It was there that they raised their six children. Dan also completed his education. He earned a Bachelor Degree from the College of Southern Utah and a Master's Degree from Utah State University. In 1993 Dan was inducted into SUU's Hall of Honor.

Dan worked as an elementary school teacher in Beaver County School District, eventually becoming principal of Belknap Elementary before retiring. Many students will remember the unit he taught on aviation in which he arranged for them to take their first flight on a small airplane. Dan also served one term on the Beaver City Council ad was active in the American Legion.

Dan held numerous callings in the LDS Church including that of bishop and served in the stake presidency and stake high council. He also gave many years of service to the boy scouts. Many will remember him for planning excursions for the youth including hikes through the Grand Canyon and Zion's Narrows.

Dan mostly enjoyed time with his family on the farm, the mountains, and on sightseeing trips throughout Utah and cross country. He is survived by his children; Lynette, Derald (Linda), Jeff (Mitzi), Dan (Holly), Nathan, and Karen (Jesus), 17 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Yardley and Carol Kesler. He is preceded in death by his sweetheart, Joyce and his parents.
