Carol LaVell Barker Smith - 5/4/2011

Class of 1950

Carol LaVell Barker Smith 78, returned home to Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born September 5, 1932 in North Ogden, Utah to John R.L. Barker and Florence Helen Campbell, the third of ten children. LaVell attended Ogden City Schools, graduating from Ogden High School.

On March 14, 1951, LaVell married her high school sweetheart, Donald Robinson Smith in the Logan LDS Temple. They have shared 60 wonderful years together here in mortality, and look forward to an eternity together beyond this life.

She enjoyed spending time with family, and loved to be in the great outdoors with them, camping, tubing and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Square Dancing occupied many years of Don and LaVell’s lives. They made countless friendships and shared many laughs and good times together. Every person who had the pleasure of knowing LaVell, left footprints in her heart. She always remembered them and cherished every opportunity to be together. She was forever a hostess, making sure that everyone was comfortable and attended to. Her hot rolls, spudnut donuts, peanut brittle, cinnamon rolls, homemade bread and pies, pot roast, poetry and crochet will be missed by all!

With her selfless nature and desire to serve, she filled many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a Relief Society and Young Women President, and with her companion they served 8 ½ years in the St. George LDS Temple as ordinance workers and three years as member locators. She was always involved in various capacities. She wrote and directed many road shows for the youth, cooked countless meals and ward dinners for others, stitched and sewed quilts until her fingers ached and found joy in serving the Lord and her fellowmen. For 17 years she was able to work with her sweetheart, Don, in managing Tana Acres Apartments in Kaysville and Harrison Regent Retirement Center in Ogden. She loved working with her husband and best friend and together they were able to travel to Hawaii, Venezuela, England and the Caribbean, to name a few. Her greatest treasures are her family, her temple covenants and her testimony of the Lord, Jesus Christ. These core values directed her in every action and were the source of strength through all of life’s challenges and opportunities. To the very end, she wanted to know that she had done all that she was supposed to do here in mortality, indeed, she has.

LaVell is survived by her husband, Don, and children, Gary (Pam) Smith Ogden, UT; Scott (Valerie) Smith St. George, UT; Jody Lynn (Robert) Creager, Washington, UT; Kelly (Dixie) Smith Logandale, NV; Kirk (Annalisa) Smith Roy, UT; 35 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty, Pat, Judy, Cindy; and two brothers, Jerry and Kenneth. We love and miss you – till we meet again!

Preceding her in death were her daughter, Janice; grandson, McKay; her parents; brothers Dick, Bob, Lynn and brother-in-law Wilford Martin.
