Cecil Verl Benzley, Jr. died unexpectedly at his home, July 16, 2011.He was born prematurely on August 17, 1935 in Ogden, Utah, the son of C. Verl Benzley and Emma Jean Gover Benzley. At the time of his birth, the doctor was not sure he would survive, it was his appetite that saved him and he would continue to enjoy a good meal his whole life.
Verl married Shirley M. Riner January 1, 1959, in San Francisco, CA. He loved everything about her especially her cooking.
He graduated from Ogden High School and the University of Utah. Verl taught history for four years in Salt Lake School District at Northwest and East High, an experience he valued all his life. He was selected Teacher of the Year by the East High Future Teachers Club in 1968.
After his father's death in 1968, he returned to a banking career at First Security Corporation. At the time he retired in 1994, he was serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Auditor.
Verl and Shirley were avid University of Utah supporters traveling out of state to cheer for their team. They were also avid golfers.
Verl was especially proud of his children and grandchildren and did everything possible to ensure their success.
Two things Verl respected were integrity in business dealings and enjoying each and every day of his life.
He is survived by his wife; Shirley M. Benzley, a son; Bruce James Benzley,(wife, Kim) and a daughter; Becky Jane Turk, (husband, Richard) a sister; Barbara Taylor, brother-in-law; David Holbrook, grandchildren; Kathryn and Brandon Turk and step- grandchildren; Taylor and Brandon Hurley.
