Anna Elizabeth Gubler Smith - 4/21/2010

Class of 1938

Anna Gubler Smith, age 88, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010. She was born September 10, 1921 to Marie Blake and Archie H. Gubler in Santa Clara, Utah.

Anna was born and raised in Santa Clara, Utah. She graduated from Dixie High School, Dixie Jr. College and BYU Academy with a Teaching Certificate. Afterwards, she moved home to Santa Clara where she married Eldred John Smith on July 2, 1942 in the St. George LDS Temple. Shortly after, they moved to Seattle, Washington where Eldred worked as a ship builder and their first child was born. After his birth, Anna got Rheumatic fever and they moved back to St. George where the remaining children were born. She worked at a dry cleaners and as school lunch lady and head cook at various local schools. Eldred built their family home where she resided her entire life except a short interval in Cedar City. While in Cedar City they were dorm parents at the College Avenue Apartments.

Anna was an active member of the LDS church where she served faithfully her whole life. She was the Stake Primary President and later became the first Primary President of the St. George 8th ward, a Relief Society President and in her later life served on a members locator mission. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and maintained a beautiful home and yard. Her daffodils were the first to bloom in town every year. She enjoyed canning, preserving fruit and crocheted for the family and humanitarian efforts. Anna was dedicated, persistent, diligent, compassionate, generous, thrifty, loving and a wonderful mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her sons; Doug (Jeannie) Smith of St. George, Doyle (Marie) Smith of St. George, daughters; Deanna (Robert G.) Davis of Cedar City, Utah, Jillyn (Art) Cottam of St. George, Utah, 28 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren, Brothers; Orwin (Velda) Gubler, Lester (Mary) Gubler, DeLoy (LaDawn) Gubler, Dale (Sherrie) Gubler, and Clark (DeAnn) Gubler all of St. George, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 grandchildren, 2 daughters-in-law; Joyce Mallard Smith and Georgia Rasmussen Smith.
