St. George, Utah - Richard (Rick) Ward Ence passed away November 9, 2010. He was born December 5, 1960 in St. George, Utah to Jay and Janice Esplin Ence. He married Tammy Webb in The St. George LDS Temple on August 25, 1982, for time and all eternity.Rick was a lifelong resident of St. George. He graduated from Dixie High School where he set and held the state track pole vaulting record for many years. He was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion in the state of Utah.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rick served a mission in Frankfurt, Germany. He has served as a Counselor in the Bishopric, as a High Counselor, Scoutmaster, Sunday School President and Family and Marriage Class Teacher.
A graduate of several advanced insurance training organizations, Rick was owner and operator of Ence Insurance Agency in St. George. He loved and mentored youth of all ages, coaching football, basketball, and baseball. He loved horses and hunting and spending time with his family on Cedar Mountain. He loved being a grandparent. Rick is known for his heart of gold.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy; children: Amy Pratt (Tyler) of St. George, Utah, Skyler Webb Ence (Alisa) of Washington, Utah, Jesse Jay Ence of St. George, Utah, Justin Roland Ence currently serving a mission in Florianopolis, Brazil, and Blake William Ence of St. George, Utah; three grandchildren, Josie Pratt, Dallin Pratt and Nathan Ence; brothers: Kevin Ence (Debbie) of St. George, Utah, Jeffery Ence (Lisa) of Santa Clara, Utah and Ben Shorty (Annie) of St. George, Utah. Rick is also survived by his parents, Jay and Janice Ence of St. George, Utah. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shauna Ence.
Rick passed away unexpectedly from a blood clot, which was secondary to an accident on a horse during the deer hunt a few weeks prior, where the horse landed on him and crushed his pelvis. Rick was flown off the mountain and had been recovering from that accident at the time.
