Jodie Sims Smith - 12/11/2011
Class of 1971
The Disneyland Haunted Mansion rolled over from 999 happy haunts to 1000; when Jodie Smith passed away peacefully at her home on December 11, 2011 at the age of 58. Jodie was born and raised in St George, UT. She was born to Lola Pymm and Wayne Sims on August 26, 1953. Jodie married Gifford Albert Smith who passed away leaving her a young widow and single mother. Jodie raised her son Colt and anyone else who was fortunate enough to wander into her life.Jodie attended Dixie High School and was a proud Flyer and later went on to receive two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Utah in Communications and in English. She bled red and remained a Ute for life.
Jodie was an active member of Dixie Ladies of Elks, a tireless fighter for lost liberal causes, and in her later years founded a local chapter for the Red Hat Society called 5 o’clock Somewhere.
What Jodie loved she loved fiercely. Jodie loves her son Colt, daughter-in-law Maggie, her dog Sparky, her nieces and nephews, Disney, Jimmy Buffet, her drag queens, and Rock and Roll.
In her own words: “I am a native of Southern Utah who is a Democrat. That makes me an oddity! I have been a widow since I was 34 and have done an amazing job raising a "practically perfect" son, Colt. I love all things Disney, am "growing older but not up, became a "Parrothead" at 50, and I believe there is rock and roll and tequila in heaven.”
Jodie is survived by; her son, Colt and daughter-in-law, Maggie (currently of Salt Lake City); by her dog, Sparky (who will be moving to Salt Lake City too); her 2 sisters Beki Barlow (Brett) of Santa Clara, Utah; Lisa Ence (Russ) of Ivins, Utah; her half-brother, John Sims (Barbara) of Kaysville, UT; and her half-sister, Sheila Porter (Stan) of Kaysville, UT.
