St. George, Utah - Afton Snow Everett passed away December 6, 2010 in St. George, Utah. She was born June 23, 1919 to Harold Stafford and Lydia Ellen Hopkins Snow in Glendale, Kane County, Utah, where her father was teaching school. Afton married Schuyler Bentley Everett in the St. George LDS Temple on February 15, 1941. They were married by Afton’s father, President Harold S. Snow. Afton’s parents returned to St. George where she grew up, the oldest of ten children.She graduated from Dixie High School and Dixie College and attended Brigham Young University where she received her teaching credentials for elementary education. She taught school in Toquerville for a short time and in St. George while Schuyler served in the military. She raised her family and returned to work as a clerk for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and the Washington County Assessor until her retirement.
Afton learned many homemaking skills from her mother and used them throughout her life. She was very industrious, baking bread, churning butter, bottling fruit and sewing for her family. She learned responsibility early in her life through caring for her younger brothers and sisters. Afton and Schuyler raised a garden each year and enjoyed the benefits of fresh vegetables. Afton was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully as a Relief Society teacher, a counselor in the Relief Society Presidency, Junior Sunday School coordinator, Sunday School teacher and as a visiting teacher. She also worked in the Genealogy Data Entry program for many years.
Afton is survived by her children: Robert (Janet) currently serving in the Scotland/Ireland Mission; Mary Ellen (Carlos) Gonzalez, St. George; Christine (Paul) Dean, West Jordan, Utah; Addison (Janise), Washington, Utah; Wayne (Debbie), St. George; Steven (Debbie), Perry, Utah; 39 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters: Dean (Darlene) Snow, Stafford (Roene) Snow, Clair Snow, Ellen (Kay) Ence, Sheldon (Patricia) Snow, Annette (David) Decker, Howard (Carol) Snow, Lee (Marie) Snow, and many nieces and nephews. Afton’s dear friend from her youth, Blanche Baker Prisbrey, Salt Lake City, also survived her. Afton was preceded in death by her husband, Schuyler; infant son, Joseph Grant; her parents; her brother, Walter; an infant brother; and sisters-in-law, Virgie, Carmen and Margy Snow.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS 8th Ward Chapel, 166 South Main Street, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, December 10th from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m to 10:45 a.m at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be at the St. George City Cemetery.
