WASHINGTON — Or beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away January 3, 2011.Mom was born October 4, 1924 in St. George, Utah to Ernest Arthur Pickering and Mary Ann Winsor Pickering.
Mom was raised in Enterprise, Utah with her four brothers and one sister. She spoke often her youth and helping the family work on the farm. Mom graduated from Enterprise High School. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood surrounded by her siblings and cousins.
She met her future husband, Farrell B. Murie and they were married several years later on May 24, 1946. During their early married life, they lived in numerous locations in Utah. Mom and Dad were blessed with three daughters and one son.
The family moved to Milford, Utah in 1957. They lived there for 14 years, except for 1 ½ years (1966-1967) when they moved to Ophir, Utah then they returned to Milford. In 1971, they moved to Washington, Utah.
Dad worked for the BLM until his retirement and he passed away in 1981. Mom has remained a widow since that time. Mom was later sealed to dad in the St. George LDS Temple. She had the opportunity to serve in the Temple for 13 years and look forward to it each week.
Mom provided a great home for us and was always there. She loved to raise a garden and do yard work and she was always making food to give others.
Mom held numerous church callings and worked in many auxiliaries of the Church. She loved her callings and you could always count on her service.
Mom is well known for her homemade quilts, crocheted items and numerous handwork projects.
She will be remembered by so many friends and neighbors for her many acts of kindness, her sweet personality, her generosity and willingness to serve. Mom was a sweet, humble person and had many friends because of her gentle, loving ways.
Thanks so much for all those who cared for mom the last 5 ½ years at the Kolob Care Center. She was well taken care of and enjoyed those years because of the many new friends and care givers she had. They will miss her. She always had family and friends in and out of her room. It was hard to be lonely when you had so many that cared about you.
Mom, we will miss you so much and you have left un with such great memories. You have always given us your love and support. Thanks for being such an amazing example and dedicated, loving and understanding mother and grandmother - they don’t come any better.
Leah was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arthur and Perry Pickering; husband, Farrell; and grandson, Trenton Murie. She is survived by her brothers, Wendell and Willard Pickering of Enterprise, UT; her sister, Marie Dodd of Seal Beach, CA; four children: Linda Hiatt of Las Vegas, NV, Colleen Tipton of St. George, UT, Carl Murie of Washington, UT and Annette (Gary) Humphrey of St. George, UT; seven grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Washington LDS 4th Ward Chapel, 82 North Main Street, Washington, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, January 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah and on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be at the Washington City Cemetery.
