Elwood LeRoy Sundberg - 6/15/2002

Class of 1941

Elwood LeRoy Sundberg, age 79, died June 15th 2002 from complications of pneumonia and congestive heart failure while vacationing in Missouri and after visiting the Nauvoo Temple. Elwood was born April 5, 1923 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Isaac Victor and Esther Elizabeth Young Sundberg. Elwood married his high school sweetheart, LuJean Olpin, June 11, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. Elwood attended public schools in Pleasant Grove and at Brigham Young University. He graduated from LDS Business College and the California College of Mortuary Science. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was stationed in San Diego and Hawaii. He established the Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home of Orem in 1946 and served the community as a funeral director for 56 years. He also worked for many years as a home builder and accountant, serving as the Utah County Auditor for 22 years. He served on a national board of the National Association of Governmental Auditors. Elwood had a life long love for sports. He excelled as an athlete at Pleasant Grove High School lettering multiple years in basketball, football, baseball, track & field, and tennis. He was an avid BYU sports fan and enjoyed playing golf. He loved coaching his children in sports and watching his children and grand children participate in sports. Elwood served as a member and past president of the Scera Board. He was president of the Golden Kiwanis. He served as treasurer of the Utah Valley Opera Association and also served as president of the Utah Funeral Directors Association. Elwood was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions including Branch President, Bishopric Counselor, High Councilor, Stake Executive Secretary and as a temple worker in the Provo Temple, and most recently in the Family History Library. Elwood is survived by his wife LuJean, and children: Kent (Liz) of Orem, UT; Jan (Allyson) of Sandy, UT; Jay (JoDee) of Orem, UT; Shauna Bywater (Doug) of Park City; and Kelly (Teri) of Orem, UT, and Ricardo Lacayo of Honolulu, Hawaii; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Gordon, of Palo Alto, Ca. Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Ronald Gary and daughter Marsha Sanderson. He was also preceded in death by a brother Ivan Verdell and sisters LaRue Sundberg and Ellis Cullimore. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 20, 2002 at 11a.m. at the Suncrest 10th Ward, 90 N. 600 W., Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held Wed., June 19, 2002 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Funeral Home, 495 South State, Orem, and also Thursday at 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Orem City Cemetery with military rites. June 18, 2002 Deseret News.
