Robert Varley Gillman - 8/9/2008

Class of 1950

Robert "Bob" Varley Gillman died August 9, 2008 surrounded by his family and loved ones. Bob was born November 15, 1931 in Lindon, Utah to Reed C. Gillman and Beulah Varley Gillman. He spent his growing up years on his family's farm and working in the family dairy business. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School and later served an LDS mission in the West Central States Mission. After his mission he served 2 years in the U.S. Army. He then met and married his best friend Joyce LaRee Jeppson in the Manti LDS Temple on November 3, 1955.

Bob's life was dedicated to serving others. He particularly enjoyed working in Scouting and was instrumental in helping many young men earn their Eagle Scout Award. As an adult Bob earned the Silver Beaver Award and William H. Spurgeon III Council Award one of scouting's highest awards.

Dad dearly loved his years spent at BYU and working at KBYU. While at BYU he fulfilled a lifelong dream of earning his bachelors degree in communications. Our father was a great example of perseverance and hard work.

As an active member of the LDS church he served in a variety of capacitiesand enjoyed working with the youth and also teaching. He most recently enjoyed being a teacher in his High Priests Group.

After retiring from working at BYU he enjoyed many trips and outings with our mom and his children, grandchildren and long time friends. He also enjoyed his interaction with the Timpanogos Gem and Mineral Club and enjoyed many outings and activities and associations with them over the years.

Bob is survived by his wife Joyce, son Alan (Lori), Layton, UT, Daughters Sandy (Mark) Olsen, Orem, UT, Michelle (Arnie) Ainge, Farr West, UT. 7 Grandchildren. Siblings: Lorna (Therald) Bushman, Salt Lake City, UT, Neola (Bob) Myrick, Boston, MA, Lee (Carolyn) Gillman, Orem, UT. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
