Robert T. Monson - 12/12/2006

Class of 1944

Robert T Monson, 80, beloved father, husband, grandfather and friend, completed his earthly mission Dec. 12, 2006 in Pleasant Grove. He was born in Pleasant Grove (Manila) Aug. 20, 1926 to George Albert and Mary Zella Thomas Monson. Bob attended schools in Pleasant Grove, graduating in 1944. He joined the Air Force after High School and served in the Philippines and Okinawa. His love of his country exemplified his life. After returning home he married his childhood friend, Beverly West Swensen, Aug. 20, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in 'Manila' and together raised six children. Bob's interest and loves were many and he delighted in perfecting and sharing his talents. He tried his hand at steer wrestling and working on a cattle ranch in Montana, but never moved farther than a mile from the home where he was born. He was a life-long Scouter, helping many young men earn their Eagle, and was awarded the Silver Beaver by the BSA. Besides working the farm he was a Cat Skinner at Geneva for 40 years. He was a stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. Bob and Bev faithfully served a mission to England from 1990-1991. Bev passed away in 2005 after 57 years of marriage. Later that year he met Leslie Shepherd and was sealed to her Jan. 3, 2006 in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple. Though their time together was short, their love and joy for each other was evident by all who knew them. Bob is survived by his wife Leslie, his children, Dennis (Vivian) Swensen, AF, Geri (Rodger) Taylor, PG, Brant (Robin) Monson, Provo, Pat (Arch) Egbert, SLC, Tom (Sumiko) Monson, St. George, and Casey Monson, Provo. Step children Lara (Jesse Curtis) Harris, VA, Jennifer (Keith Burdick) Harris, CA, and Sarah Harris, CA; 27 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
