Rebecca Oakes (Singleton) - 10/13/2020

Class of 1981

Rebecca Oakes Singleton
Rebecca Oakes Singleton passed away unexpectedly in her West Valley City, Utah home on October 13, 2020. She was only 57 years old.

Rebecca was born the first of six children on July 5, 1963 in Vicenza, Italy while her father was serving in the U.S. Air Force. When she was three years old, the family moved back to the United States, living in Mississippi for a few years. The growing family moved to Utah in 1970, eventually settling in Lindon, where her parents still live today.

Rebecca graduated from Pleasant Grove High School, earned an associate’s degree from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and continued her education at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, studying English literature.

Rebecca was a caring and dedicated advocate for children with Autism, most importantly, her son, James. She worked for years as a teacher’s aide for the Granite School District and was an Autism Specialist using ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis). She helped to set up and run the pilot ASSERT (Autism Support Services Education Research & Training) program in the Granite School District, using individualized instruction and discrete trials with one-on-one interactions.

Rebecca was a dedicated, loving wife and mother and treasured her family above all else. She will be greatly missed by her adoring husband, Bryan Darnell Singleton, her cherished sons Joseph Folaumoeloa Fatani and James Darnell Singleton, and her stepdaughter Miekayla Singleton. Her surviving family includes her parents, Patricia May Nuffer and Jesse Willard Oakes, and siblings Lauren Reiser (Alan), Jared Nuffer Oakes (Marlena), Jonathan Day Oakes (Nekia), Michael Lynn Oakes (Tanya), and Matthew Febuary Oakes (Jessica), many nieces and nephews, and one great-niece who loved spending time with her great-aunt.

Rebecca—daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, aunt, advocate—left us far too soon.

Family and friends of Rebecca are invited to join a celebration of life memorial on Monday, October 19, 2020, 2:00 p.m., at Memorial Redwood Mortuary & Cemetery,
