Alda Viola Fugal (Gardner) - 11/9/1985

Alda Fugal Gardner, 81, of Afton Wyo. died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1985, in Nephi Utah, of natural causes.
There will be a viewing tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the Schwab Mortuary. Funeral services will be Friday at 12 noon at the Afton LDS Second Ward. A viewing will also be held prior to the funeral from 10 a.m. to noon. Interment will be at the Afton Cemetery.
A viewing was held Monday Nov. 11 at the LDS Third Ward in Pleasant grove, Utah.
She was born July 9, 1904 in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Jens Peter and Lavina C, Fugal (American Mother of the Year, 1965).
She married Milford Irvin Gardner Oct 2, 1928 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married 57 years.
She graduated from Pleasant Grove High and Seminary in 1923 where she gave the Seminary Graduation Valedictory address. Alda attended BYU in 1923-24, majoring in English and a minor in speech, later she completed her B.S. Degree through attending many summer schools. She graduated with high honors in 1952 (member Phi Kappa Phi Natl. Honorary Society).
She accepted a call to the Eastern States Mission from 1924-26 serving under Pres. B,H. Roberts. She met her future husband there. She and her husband later accepted a call to the Cumorah Mission from 1964-1966.
Following her marriage to Milford I. Gardner, they made their home in Afton, where her husband was born and raised. It was there that she gained church wide prominence through her 28 years of teaching seminary---10 of which she served as principal. One of these teaching years was spent in American fork during a time when she and her husband were needed to help with her mother's care.
She influenced the lives of hundreds of young people through her deep testimony coupled with her superb teaching ability and knowledge of the gospel. She has authored many published articles and poems and has been a sought-after speaker and reader for numerous events.
Alda was the only woman seminary principal in the church system. Elder Boyd K. Packer once stated, "Mrs Gardner is unsurpassed as a teacher".
She was an honorary member of the delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, an international woman educators' organization.
Alda served as a Sunday school Teacher--mostly Gospel Doctrine for 42 years and received an Honorary Gleaner Award for 25 years of continuous service in MIA as Ward and Stake President and dance, drama and speech director.
She directed many plays in Star Valley as wwell as giving humorous readings. She had a unique gift of expressing herself in poetry and wrote an expression of sympathy in verse for many funerals.
Her hobby was raising flowers and gardening--a love and knowledge obtained from her mother. Floral arrangements from her garden and the mountains graced many an occasion.
Survivors include her husband, Milford I. Gardner and 2 sons and 3 daughters. She was preceded in death by her daughter Janeene (Mrs Ted Heiner) of Bedford, Wyoming. Surviving children are; Donald F. Gardner, Provo; Mrs H. Paul (Alda Vee) Hull, Spanish Fork; M. Ballard Gardner, Orem; Mrs Ramon (Lanna) Warren, Nephi; Mrs Jerry (Helen) Bowcut, Burley, Idaho; 30 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Delbert J. Fugal, Sandy; Mrs Alfred (Vida) Swenson, Provo; Mrs Harold M. (Genevieve) Wright and Mrs Loile J. (Anna) Bailey, both of Salt Lake City, and Jean A. Fugal and Dr. John P. Fugal, both of Pleasant Grove.
