Thomas Lee Torres, 44, died Wednesday March 31, 1999 in St. George, Utah due to an accident. Tom was born Feb. 11, 1955 in Cedar City, Utah. He is the son of Max L. and Clyda Porter Torres and JoAnn Reese. Tom married Debbie McDonald in September 1978 in the St. George LDS Temple. They were later divorced.Tom was always sports-oriented starting with Minor League. He played Little League, where he was always a member of the all-star team. He graduated in 1973 from Cedar High School, where he participated in football, wrestling, and excelled in baseball, becoming an all-state player and earning a scholarship to Dixie College.
Tom was an active member of the LDS Church. He loved teaching the gospel. He had served an LDS mission in Billings, Montana from 1975 to 1977. After serving his mission, Tom returned to St. George where he kept active in sports as an umpire and coach for many teams. He was an accomplished writer, a good public speaker, and an excellent racquetball teacher and player. Tom enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, cycling, and time spent with his children. For many years he was a reserve deputy sheriff, a member of the Search and Rescue, the Search and Rescue Dive Team, a medical officer and member of the H.E.A.T. (SWAT) law enforcement team, and also an EMT.
Tom is survived by his children: Talea, Tyler, TaraLee, and Tanner Torres all of St. George; parents Max and Clyda Torres of St. George and JoAnn Reese of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandparents Thora Porter of Cedar City, Utah. Mildred Mayman of Parowan, Utah and Miguel (Fauntella) Torres of Washington, Utah; three brothers, Mike ( Debbie) Torres of Cedar City, Jeff Torres and Richard (Sarah) Torres of St. George; two sisters , Natalie (Kerry) DeMille of LaVerkin, Utah, and Joy Gisi of Hawaii; two aunts raised as sisters, Delores (LeRoy) Houchen of Cedar City, and Carmen (Richard) Gale of Beaver, Utah. Tom was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony, a niece, Tory Torres and grandparents Thomas Reese Consuelo Torres, and Grandon Porter.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 5th, 1999 at 11:00 am at the Dixie Downs Stake Center, 1184 N. Dixie Downs Road.
