James C. Hall - 8/26/2008

Class of 1947

St. George, Utah - James C. Hall, age 80, passed away at home August 26, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was born March 29, 1928 in Cedar City, Utah, the 8th child of James A. and Mary Ann Jones Hall.

Jim spent his early childhood in Enterprise and Cedar City, Utah. He graduated from Cedar City High School. He moved to Pleasant Grove and worked for his brother-in-law, Marian Hoopes, and learned to finish cement. He needed a little excitement in his life, so Jim, Andy Johnson, Kenny Sorenson, and Gene Jackson went to Wyoming and got jobs cutting timber on Grey's River in western Wyoming. He met his future wife, Lorna McCoy, in Afton, Wyoming, where they were married on February 19, 1950. They were later sealed in the St. George Temple on June 7, 1958. They raised their family in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Their 10 children, are: Christine (Ken) Johnson, Victor, Idaho; Jimmie Hall (deceased); Michael (Penny) Hall, Washington, UT; Lorneta (Gary) Ferguson, Toquerville, UT; Clifford (Kimberly) Hall, Apache Junction, AZ; Eileen (Leon) White, Indianola, UT; Robert (Isabelle) Hall, St. George, UT; Coy (Sheri) Hall, Mesquite, NV; Gary (Stephanie) Hall, St. George, UT; Malinda (Kevin) Willett, Pleasant Grove, UT.

Jim loved to work and had many occupations during his lifetime including cement finisher; plasterer; dry wall; meter reader for Utah Power & Light; police officer for Pleasant Grove City; brick mason; managed the outdoor camp in Scofield, UT for the Alpine School District; worked in the maintenance department for Alpine School District; and helped rebuild the brick ovens at Geneva Steel.

When he retired he moved to Santa Clara, Utah and worked for Jim Rosenbruch on his farm. He moved to St. George and worked for his sons in the ornamental iron business "Bear Ornamental Iron." He also made many beautiful shelves, tables and chests for kids, neighbors, and friends. The most important thing in Jim's life was his family and the love he had for them. He loved family get togethers - "Family First."

Jim was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a counselor in three bishoprics, Stake Executive Secretary, scout master three times, cub scout leader, YM President, high counselor, high priest group leader. He also served with Lorna in the Nauvoo, IL Mission. While in Nauvoo he worked for NRI (Nauvoo Restoration, Inc.).

His work ethics were above reproach. His motto was: "Do it right the first time."

The pain and sorrow shared by those who knew and loved this man are only surpassed by the joy and happiness which he gave to brighten our lives. The smiles he brought to our faces far outnumber the tears that will be shed in his passing. His life has been an incredible example of love, faith, and devotion to his wife, family, and friends and the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is not the end of his life's mission, only the beginning of the next phase.

Jim was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie; a granddaughter, Tannika White; grandson, Preston Hall; great-granddaughter Taci Papworth; his parents; sisters, Reatha Hoopes, Ora Larson, Rilla Davenport, and Cleo Gentry; brothers, Dee Hall and Jay Hall. He is survived by his wife Lorna, of 58 years; 9 children, 48 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; sister Audrey Ruesch; sister-in-law Gladys Hall; and brother-in-law, Dayne Gentry.
