Mary Carolyn Clark Hill - 4/16/2010

Class of 1959

Mary Carolyn Clark Hill, age 69, passed away Friday, April 16, 2010, at her Mesquite, Nevada, residence following a lingering illness. She was born February 23, 1941, in Cedar City, Utah, the last one of seven children born to Douglas Collins Clark and Lillian Smith Clark. Mary grew up in Cedar City where she was a curious, fun-loving child who made friends easily and kept them for a life time. Her beloved father died when she was 12. Shortly afterwards she lived for a year with her aunt and uncle, Vilate and Bud Fuller and her cousin Suzy. She graduated from Cedar High School in 1959 and went on to Utah State in Logan where she met her future husband, John Kent (Jack) Hill from Helper, Utah.

Jack and Mary were married May1962. They lived for two years in Helper, Utah, where their son Kyle was born. Later they moved to Cedar City where Jack attended and graduated from CSU, now SUU. Following Jack's graduation, they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Jack taught elementary school and later became Manager of Channel 10 TV. It was in Las Vegas that their second child, Stephanie was born. November 11 1983, Mary and Jack were sealed in the St. George Temple. Mary was active in the LDS church in Las Vegas where she served in several jobs, her favorite being Girl's Camp Director. She always enjoyed the mountains, fishing and hunting. She was an excellent marksman. In her youth she won several trap shooting events, and at age 15 won the State of Arizona's women's trapshooting contest.

Mary had a variety of jobs and talents. She worked several summers at Grand Canyon National Park where she made many friends. In Las Vegas she was employed by Dr. Lance Whetten. She had a love of history beginning at age 5 when she spent hours conversing with Dr. William R. Palmer, author and history professor at CSU. This interest continued as an adult. She had an amazing knowledge of local, family and Western history. Mary enjoyed telling stories, had a unique sense of humor, sometimes an irreverent wit, and was a natural entertainer. She liked working outside, always had a garden, was as comfortable on a horse or digging ditches as she was in keeping a tidy house. From birth to death she had many pets, particularly dogs. The latest were three shih tzus. She was also an excellent cook, and hostess. Many family members, friends and travelers spent time at the Hill homes in Vegas, Mesquite or Cedar City.

One of Mary's hobbies was finding, restoring and giving away antiques. She helped furnish more than one house for nieces, nephews and friends. She will always be remembered as a generous lady.

She is survived by her husband of Cedar City, son Kyle and daughter-in-law Tanya and their children Rutger, Kylee and Porter of Elk Ridge, Utah; a daughter, Stephanie and her son John Carlos of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law, Erma Clark Dalton, a brother Richard and sister-in-law Patricia Clark; brother Bob and sister-in-law Donna Jean Clark all of Cedar City; a sister Virginia and brother-in-law Fred Esmeier of Washington, Utah, many nieces and nephews including Melvin Clark of Kanarraville who was like a brother. Preceding her in death were a sister, Rosalin, her father, mother, a brother, Douglas Smith Clark, and a brother Kenneth and his wife Claudia.
