CEDAR CITY - Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Dr. Sheldon Kerry Grant, passed away peacefully at his home in New Harmony, Utah on Sunday, August 28, 2005 following a lengthy illness.He was born on April 29, 1939 in Cedar City, Utah to Sheldon B Grant and Vada Prince Grant. Kerry grew up in New Harmony and attended grade school there. He attended Cedar High School and College of Southern Utah. He married his childhood sweetheart Lana Jean Prince on July 3, 1960 in the St. George, Utah LDS Temple.
Kerry received his Bachelor of Science degree, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and his Doctorate degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Utah. Following his education, he accepted a position as a professor of Geology at the University of Missouri - Rolla where he taught from 1965 to 1998. During his tenure of teaching he also directed and taught at the UMR summer geology field camp, where a scholarship was later established in his name. He was an outstanding teacher, loved and admired by colleagues, students, and friends.
Kerry is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a Sunday School teacher, teacher of the genealogy class, and as a home teacher. He had great love for and devotion to his family. His great joy and pride was in his children and grandchildren. Together the family spent many memorable hours walking, hiking, reading and playing.
He loved the outdoors, sports, hiking, mapping, camping, and hunting. He loved books, especially those pertaining to science, history, and Church History. Kerry spent many hours researching and compiling his family history.
He is survived by his wife Lana Prince Grant of New Harmony, Utah, children Jacqueline (Darryl) Wiggins of New Harmony, Utah, Chris Grant of Salem, Maria (Eric) Sailsbery of Layton, Utah, parents Sheldon (Bonnie) Grant of New Harmony, Utah, and sisters Rolaine King of New Harmony, Utah and Velda Grant of Salt Lake City, Utah. Kerry is preceded in death by his mother, Vada Prince Grant.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning, September 1, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the New Harmony Ward Chapel. Family and friends may call on Wednesday evening, August 31, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Southern Utah Mortuary, and Thursday morning, September 1, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
