Jeffrey Paul Whetman - 10/5/2009

Class of 1983

Beloved husband, father, son, and friend passed away at his home on October 5, 2009, at the age of 44 after a valiant battle with melanoma.

Born Sept 2, 1965 in Murray, Utah to Stanley Paul and Lois Ann Whetman, Jeff married Suzanne Nakken June 16, 1990. Jeff and Suzanne have been blessed with 2 fine sons, Joshua Jeffrey, 15, and Matthew Paul, 12, and a beautiful daughter, Maria Suzanne, 2.

Jeff moved to Cedar City, Utah in 1978 and graduated from Cedar High School. He was a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland serving as 1st Regimental Commander, 2nd in student command to the Brigade Commander. His education at the academy was interrupted for his service as an LDS missionary in the Nagoya, Japan Mission. Jeff received his wings and became a naval aviator. He flew the P3 Orion with VP 46 while stationed at Whidbey Island WA. Jeff became a flight instructor at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma. He gave up active duty and became a pilot for Delta Airlines in 2001. After 9/11 Jeff was furloughed. He worked with Seimens Inc. out of their Orlando office for 5 years. He returned to Delta in the spring of 2008, but was unfortunately diagnosed with melanoma in August. He served in the Naval Reserve and had recently been promoted to the rank of Commander and had received his 1st command assignment with the Navair Reserve Group at Jacksonville, Florida.

Jeff is survived by his wife and children, his parents, his brother, Chris Whetman of Las Vegas and his sister, Aimee Bulloch of Cedar City along with many other treasured family members.

The family would like to extend appreciation to the fine medical personnel who have cared for Jeff especially at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando.

They would also like to thank the wonderful family members and friends who have offered invaluable love and support through this difficult year. Each prayer offered has blessed Jeff and his family.

A "fuzzy", in this case, is a feeling or an emotion like "I miss you", "I love you", or just "thinking of you". Fuzzies can be left every day.

Jeff is a friend, fellow Naval Aviator and Brother in the Gospel. I often think of Jeff and am grateful for the impact he had on my life... He taught us all how to live.
