Boys soccer went 6-6, made playoffs

The Grand County High School boys soccer team won its final region game Tuesday, April 23, defeating the Richfield Wildcats at Richfield by the score of 2-1.

Grand’s first goal was scored by sophomore Koby Sobremesana on a penalty kick in the first half. Richfield later came back to tie the game with a goal by Noah Mesi. But with about 10 minutes left in the contest, Sobremesana struck again, weaving through multiple defenders to kick a shot from the right side into the net. The Red Devils held on to win, giving Grand a 6-6 final region record and the No. 4 spot in the 2A East division.

With the victory, Grand earned a date at the state playoffs, which started Wednesday, May 1 at the home fields of the higher-seeded schools.

The No. 4 seed Red Devils traveled to Ogden to take on the 2A Central division’s top team, the St. Joseph Jayhawks. St. Joseph won the contest 9-1, eliminating Grand from the playoffs. Joseph Shumway made Grand’s only goal of the game in the second half.

Grand’s seniors were honored at halftime of their 4-0 home victory over the winless North Sevier Wolves on April 11. Seniors Kamron Call, Wesley Rodda, Dexter Sheets, and Calen Shumway started and played virtually the entire game. Senior manager Nikysha Harmison was also honored along with the four players during halftime.

Grand scored all four of its goals before halftime. Junior Nat Smith got the Red Devils on the scoreboard first with a header from a corner kick. After that, Shumway kicked two goals, with Rodda’s lone score coming in between them.

On Tuesday, April 16, the Red Devils played their final home game of the season when they hosted the Wasatch Academy Tigers. Wasatch Academy won that contest 5-1, as Emrem Tanriover recorded a three-goal hat trick for the Tigers. Grand’s only goal of the game came on a penalty kick by sophomore Koby Sobremesana.

Two days later, the Red Devils traveled to Manti to face the undefeated Templars. Manti won that game 7-0.

Then, on Saturday, April 20, the Red Devils traveled to Mount Pleasant for a rematch with Wasatch Academy. This time around, the Red Devils eked out a 2-1 victory, getting goals from both Calen Shumway and Joseph Andrew. Goalkeeper Layton Call stopped all but one of the Tigers’ shots on goal.
