In early March, a total of 14 GCHS Art Club students and two advisers went on a six-day road trip to California to visit art museums in the L.A. area.
The students who went on the trip were Deanna Irvin, Shalia Harmison, Jasmin Swink, Justin Cresswell, Dexter Sheets, Miranda Shumway, KyAisha Lewis, Maren Larsen, Meera Edwards, Brandon Collins, Brianna Ballard, Zarena Rigby, Jessica Pyatt, and Alexis Solis. Chaperones were GCHS teachers Christa Green and Ashley Violett.
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” That quote from Henry David Thoreau sums up what we students learned, experienced, felt and explored during the trip.
Our amazing trip started on Wednesday March 6 with a five-hour drive to New Harmony, near St. George. Even though it was a long trip, there was never a dull moment. Early next morning, we were off to California. After a very long day of driving, we arrived at the Huntington in San Marino by 1 p.m.. The Huntington was beautiful, and there was so much to look at: gardens, statues, sculptures, paintings and everything in between.
For the next three days, we went to some of the most amazing museums with incredible pieces of art. On March 9, after going to the Getty Museum and the beach for an hour, we made our way to Disneyland. This of course was fun until we started heading back to the hotel which was very close to Disneyland, so we had to walk. This wouldn’t have been a problem if our tour guide had given us the right directions back to the hotel. Other than that, we had an amazing time. My personal favorite part of the trip was going to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. There were some interesting and some disturbing art pieces in this museum, but overall I loved what was there. From the spaghetti noodle ‘sculpture’ to the Urban Light and even giant elevators and very long escalators, this museum is a modern art museum, meaning even the Levitating Mass is a masterpiece. On March 10 after two last museums, we headed back to Utah. Although we were sad it was over I think we can all agree that it was an amazing trip!
