George Amos Schumann - 2/16/2012

Class of 1946

Richfield, Utah - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, George Amos Schumann, age 84, died February 16, 2012 at his home in Richfield, surrounded by his family, after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born April 22, 1927 in Tremonton, Utah, a son of George Ludwig Christian and Louisa Marie Emma Reinhardt Schumann. He graduated from Bear River High School, Clas of 1946 in Tremonton. George served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He married Susanna Ballard, May 22, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple.

George was a very active member of the LDS Church, serving as Bishop, Bishop’s Counselor, District President, Branch President, High Priest Group Leader, Home Teacher, Sunday School President, Ward Mission Leader and Stake High Councilor. He served as an instructor for many different church classes.

George was an active member of the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association, the Soil Conservation Service and served as County Farm Bureau President. He was named the State of Nevada’s “Outstanding Young Farmer” of the year in 1960 and attended the National Convention in regards to that.

George enjoyed gardening and was very good at it. He always had a wonderful vegetable garden. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to work with wood. He very much enjoyed his life as rancher and farmer and took great pride in it. You might safely call farming “his hobby”.

George is survived by his loving wife, Susanna, of Richfield; children: Carolyn Jenkins of Pleasant Grove; Monte B. and Danawn Schumann of Vanderhoff, British Columbia, Canada; Paul R. and Judy Schumann of Wells, Nevada; Georganna and Brian Hunter of Ogden; Sondra and Kerry Shepherd of Richfield; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Irene S. Hunsaker of Vanderhoff, British Columbia, Canada.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Schumann; his parents; a grandson, Brendan Schumann; three brothers and three sisters: Hyrum F. Schumann, Henry M. Schumann, Helmut Schumann, Lydia Roberts, Ida Schumann and Irene Hunsaker.
