Douglas Brown - 6/26/2011

Class of 1938

Douglas Brown, former long-time resident of the San Jacinto Valley, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011 at his home in Cedar City, Utah after a short illness surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on August 31, 1920 in Kernville, California and his family moved to the San Jacinto Valley when he was 8 months old. He lived in the valley all of his life until he moved to Cedar City in March 2010.

He attended school in San Jacinto graduating from San Jacinto High School in 1939. After high school graduation he attended the University of Redlands where he excelled in football and baseball.

His college education was interrupted by World War II where he served in the United Stated Navy as a First Lieutenant.

After the war he returned to the University where he completed his degree in 1946.

He taught his first year after graduation in Exeter, California and then in 1948 he returned to San Jacinto High School where he was teacher, coach and in later years, principal. He retired from the San Jacinto School District in 1980 and for the next 10 years was employed by Hemet Insurance Company where he sold insurance.

He retired from there in 1990. He was a member of the San Jacinto Rotary Club for many years.

After his retirement he and his wife, Mary Ellen, traveled extensively throughout the United States in their motor home until their move to Cedar City.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Ellen and four daughters: Gayle (Gary) Young of Cedar City, Utah; Terri (Garry) Packham of Hemet; Pam (Victor) Rajcany of Redlands and Chris Trogdon of Yucaipa. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Greg and Corey Young, Kevin Packham and Holly Heiss, Brian Senior, Josh and Phillip Rajcany and Brad Trogdon. Also surviving are 9 great-grandchildren: Patrick Herron, Autumn Senior, Mikayla and Noah Young, Brendan and Ethan Young, Ana and Lucas Packham and Jordan Heiss.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a scholarship in the name of Douglas Brown to the San Jacinto Education Foundation/Alumni Association - 2045 So. San Jacinto Ave., San Jacinto, CA 92583.

A "Celebration of His Life" will be held on Saturday, July 16th at 6:00 pm in the gymnasium at San Jacinto High School.
