Flagstaff beats Panthers in second cross-town match
The Flagstaff Eagles (5-0-1) can play the rest of the boys soccer season able to say it didn't lose to Coconino (5-1-1) during the 2012-13 season.
After opening the cross-town rivalry series with a 3-3 tie almost a month ago, Flagstaff beat the Panthers 3-1 Tuesday at home.
Flagstaff moved into the No. 8 spot in the AIA Division II rankings while Coconino slipped to No. 18.
The Eagles and Coconio traded goals in the first half, as Flagstaff's Uriel Rivera scored on a pass from Ramsay Shannon and the Panthers got a goal off a penalty shot.
After playing even the rest of the first half, Flagstaff's defense held the Panthers scoreless while the Eagles offense scored a pair of goals. Matt Schran scored from 40 feet out and Tony Avitia added a goal on an assist from Rivera.
"The defense stepped up and shut down (Coconino's) front line," Flagstaff coach Mike Jenkins said. "Honestly, Coconino only had a couple of shots on goal."
The Eagles host Prescott Tuesday while Coconino travels to River Valley Thursday.
