Diver Brian Allen of Flagstaff High School finished second at the state swimming and diving competition at Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa on Friday. Allen was also awarded as the state's Diver of the Year.

Flagstaff swimming coach Ian Kearsley said that the divers had to perform 11 different dives for which they were scored based on their technical ability.

Allen, who was the third-place finisher at last year's state meet, finished at or near the top of every diving competition he entered for Flagstaff this season.

"I can't say enough good things about Brian," Kearsley said. "He's got amazing character -- a really strong work ethic. He's really dedicated when it came to weight training. He's just a great kid."
